Summary, etc This research describes the kinds of initiatives that were perceived by community members and service providers as working well in refugee and migrant communities and the conditions that encourage them to flourish. The report presents two case studies of community initiatives addressing family violence in refugee and migrant communities. Six other initiatives are described more briefly. These were chosen from a dozen recommended in the course of interviews with key informants from central, regional and local government, and from community organisations. The research was not intended to evaluate these initiatives and there was no analysis of client outcomes. The purpose was to learn from those involved in addressing family violence in refugee and migrant communities, and to get the voice of communities heard. It is hoped that these case studies will inspire community groups, service providers and government agencies, to initiate community-based programmes that address family violence. This research also aims to help fill the identified gap in New Zealand research on community-based programmes and family violence in refugee and migrant communities.
The two case study initiatives are:
• Umma Trust, which provides services and support aimed at empowering women, overcoming isolation and preventing family violence
• Second Chance, which provides post-refuge education and training aimed at independence for survivors of intimate partner violence.
The research is a joint project between the Centre for Social Research and Evaluation (CSRE) of the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MWA). The research was undertaken as part of the Programme of Action of the Taskforce for Action on Violence within Families. (from Executive Summary).
