Summary, etc This is the second report in a series of eight publications resulting from a research programme on custody and access issues in the Family Courts undertaken by the Policy and Research Division of the Department of Justice. The report presents the findings of a survey of parents who obtained a dissolution of their marriage during 1988. The main objective of the research was to describe the custody and access arrangements made by the parents. Information was collected from court documents and a questionnaire that was sent to 581 people involved in a dissolution. The descriptive information that was collected from the court documents included: the dates of marriage, separation and dissolution; the number of children affected by the dissolution; the age of the youngest child; and the occupations and ages of both parties. Three time periods were analysed in the questionnaire: six months after separation, one year after separation, and two years after separation. Questions predominantly relating to the arrangements that had been made for the care of children since parental separation were asked in the questionnaire. The results provide descriptive information about the parents who participated in the survey. This includes the parents' use of the Family Courts, and the parents' impressions of the effects of the separation on their children. The report concludes with 14 points summarised from the main findings, which provide information on demographics and custody and access arrangements.
