520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc This research project focuses on interviews with 7 women within the Wellington/Hutt region who self reported experiences of domestic violence, and their interaction with health professionals. The sample was non-randomised and the method used was a qualitative design with open-ended interview questions. The Wellington Women's Refuge Collective supported this project, which was designed to gain insight into the thoughts and feelings of victims of intimate partner violence towards health professionals. The purpose of this research project was to assist health professionals to improve services by highlighting physical and psychological manifestations of domestic violence. This project indicates that a proportion of health professionals are unhelpful and unaware of the resources available to women patients affected by domestic violence. There was at this time little formal input from medical professionals in action to address family violence. The report highlighted a need for more research relating to why health professionals do not acknowledge family violence in women patients. The authors recommend that health professionals provide follow-up strategies, treatment plans, and that they validate the abuse by providing information on legal and social supports available. Five areas of improvements to the health system are highlighted: building health public policy, creating supportive environments, strengthening community action, education to break the cycle of domestic violence, and an integrated approach to domestic violence.
