520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc This essay discusses a research study that explored examples of parents who have decided not to use physical punishment as a discipline strategy with their children. Thirty participants were interviewed by telephone, and the questions revolved around why they had decided not to use smacking, when they had made this decision, and had they ever used physical discipline. The results indicated that the parent's own experience of physical punishment in their family of origin was the greatest influence on discipline style. The majority of the participants had decided not to engage in the use of physical discipline before the child was born, particularly due to their beliefs about the negative outcomes of smacking.
