520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc This article reviews the extent to which family group conferences have become part of child protection practice throughout Australia. The article is based on a more extensive report prepared for the Australian Centre for Child Protection by the author in 2007. The article describes the operation of family group conferences in New Zealand, where the practice originated. It then assesses the adoption of family group conferences in Australia, as measured by how often they are used and whether they follow the original model and fulfil the same function. Data was collected for the research through published information, legislation, policy documents and interviews with conferencing practitioners across Australia. The research shows that conferences play a substantively different role in Australia compared to New Zealand. A number of implications for the future of conferencing in Australia are discussed. The author concludes that sharing the knowledge developed in separate locations contributes to debates regarding how conference can best contribute to broader child protection goals.
