Summary, etc This commentary provides a critique of the report "Hitting Home: Men Speak About Abuse of Women Partners", commissioned by the Department of Justice in 1995. It criticises the methodology in terms of the way abuse was defined, arguing that the definition was too broad. It is further argued that this broad definition of abuse has brought about an exaggeration of the prevalence of male violence towards women which, in turn, trivialises serious abuse and could lead to policy and legislation that are poorly informed.
