Summary, etc | This study explored the risk factors associated with young people, aged 13 to 24 years, making serious suicide attempts. The associations between selected socio-demographic factors, childhood experiences, mental disorders, and the possibility of serious suicide attempt in young people are examined, as is the relationship between these factors and vulnerability to serious suicide attempt. One hundred and twenty-nine young people who had made serious suicide attempts were compared with 153 randomly selected people. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the aim of gaining an understanding of each participant's life history and the possible risk factors for serious suicide attempts. The factors explored included childhood sexual abuse and physical abuse, and parental violence. Findings of the research show that negative childhood experiences can increase an individual's risk of a serious suicide attempt. |
