520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc This article discusses the issue of care and advocacy in the context of nurses working with women who experience partner abuse. It draws on the author's pilot study, "Through the Looking Glass: Nurses' Responses to Women Experiencing Partner Abuse", completed in 1997. It looks at why some nurses breach their professional duty to care and why some fail to act where a duty to care forms an intrinsic basis to practice. An individual and socio-historical perspective is traversed in examining this issue. The problems associated with the role of advocating for women who have been abused are also discussed. As a way of moving forward on the identified issues, the author proposes a model that incorporates supportive strategies when working with women who experience partner abuse. A move away from the victim-blaming paradigm is posited and a call is made to see nurses as capable in their duty to care, and duty of advocacy.
