520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc This article outlines research that aimed to determine the prevalence of intimate partner violence among women seeking emergency healthcare. Eligible adult women presenting to an urban emergency department during randomly selected 4-hour time blocks were asked to participate in a study about violence between partners. A structured interview was conducted. Protocols were utilised that kept women's and children's safety paramount. One hundred and seventy-four women aged 16 to 88 years of age participated. The researchers found that 21% of women had experienced partner violence, and 44% reported partner violence at some time in their lifetime. A large proportion of women were willing to answer sensitive questions about partner violence. The rates of partner violence among women seeking healthcare were of a similar level to rates reported internationally. The authors argue that healthcare providers have a unique opportunity to identify and intervene to assist women exposed to partner abuse, and that this should be used to its fullest potential.
