Profile of women in prison 2022-23 : qualitative report Hilde Tubex and Natalie Gately - Perth, WA : University of Western Australia, 2024 - electronic document (48 pages) ; PDF file

In 2008, the then Department of Corrective Services (DCS) conducted the latest ‘Profile of Women in Prison’ survey – previous surveys had taken place in 2001, 2003 and 20005. The 2008 project provided a profile of women in WA prisons, based on quantitative information from the DCS ‘Total Offender Management System’ (TOMS) and qualitative semi-structured interviews with a representative sample of 64 women prisoners. Given the significant and ongoing increase of women in prison since the original dataset, we were invited by the WA Office of Crime Statistics and Research (WACSAR) of the Department of Justice to repeat the Profile of Women in Prison research. The main aim of this project is to build a current profile of women in prison and identify the drivers of women’s’ imprisonment and their needs, to inform future practices and policies.
