Background:
Prior to this wānanga, Auckland Council, with the support of the Ministry of Social Development, New Zealand Family Violence and other agencies hosted a series of 4 hui during 2012 and 2013. That series of meetings was a regional initiative to bring together people working to prevent family violence and sexual violence from across Auckland to focus on primary prevention .

On 2 March 2012, an Auckland Regional Hui on family and sexual violence prevention was held at Ōrākei Marae in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland. Following the hui, in consultation with the family and sexual violence sectors, Council Officers drafted a series of short term actions that Auckland Council could undertake in 2012/13 within existing resources and budget. One of these was to hold three regional networking meetings per year. The first one was held on Monday 10 September 2012. A second meeting was held on 26 February 2013 in Mangere. The third and final meeting was held at Western Springs on 11 December 2013.
