The aim of this study was to examine data routinely available to perinatal healthcare providers, to identify factors associated with the occurrence of abusive head trauma, and to contribute to evidence that could inform targeted prevention programs. A multicenter, retrospective case-control study of perinatal records from 142 cases of abusive head trauma and 550 controls, matched by date and hospital of birth from 1991 to 2010 in New Zealand was conducted.
