Address by Laurie O'Reilly Commissioner for Children, Family Courts Association, Christchurch, Thursday 17 July 1997.

This paper discusses the need for greater advocacy of children's rights in the pursuit of meeting children's needs adequately. Various articles concerning the care and protection of children from the "United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child" (1989) are examined, and this paper highlights how New Zealand falls short in meeting these obligations. Recommendations include the need for more government resources to be directed towards supporting families to protect children, and for the legal professions to act in the best interests of children in maltreatment cases.
