This report outlines the progress of seven funded Age Concern New Zealand Elder Abuse and Neglect Services. Data was collected from 1 July 1997 to 30 June 1998 and covers referral and case numbers, referral sources, client information, types of abuse, living situation, and abuser information. The report also includes some comparison with the same data base for the period 1 July 1996 to 30 June 1997. Discussion is provided on the factors that contribute to elder abuse and neglect, as well as the extent of such abuse. The social and economic costs associated with elder abuse are traversed, along with prevention strategies and the issues affecting prevention and intervention services.
