Amongst a myriad of other variables, sexual abuse, physical abuse and family discord are identified as risk factors for negative developmental outcomes. Physical and or sexual abuse are cited as factors contributing to sexual risk-taking and a greater number of unplanned pregnancies amongst adolescent females. The book also links child abuse and neglect and poor familial relationships to increased suicidal behaviours among adolescents.
