Preliminary research report available (Long term service needs for women and children survivors of family violence, 1996)

This study aimed to discover what long term services are available for survivors of family violence, and to identify any gaps in service provision. Interviews were held with providers and women survivors of family violence, and a content analysis of the data was conducted to identify common themes. The study found that in general the immediate needs of survivors were met adequately, but there were gaps in long term provision of services. Many of the women participants in the study stated that follow-up care and ongoing support would be beneficial over the long term. Barriers to accessing services included financial constraints, lack of childcare services, and limited transport means to the service location. Gaps in service provision, such as counselling and support, were also identified for children and young persons. Greater communication and coordination between services was emphasised as essential to the continuing safety of survivors of family violence. The study also discovered the need for increased services specifically for Maori and Pacific clients.
