The research in this report was carried out by the pre-school specialist/research psychologist at the Refuge, the UK's largest single provider of accommodation and support to women and children experiencing domestic violence. It carries on the work begun by the previous Head of Children's Services at the Refuge in 1995, in the course of which she observed the high numbers of children under 5 years passing through the refuge houses. There was also a scarcity of research and literature about the effects of domestic violence on young children, and a lack of appropriate interventions for them. Consequently, the current project was developed. The report describes a model of intervention which includes empathy groups and individual debriefing/play sessions with the children as well as individual child-focused sessions with the mothers. Further research will be needed to enable a better understanding of the effects of living with domestic violence on pre-school children in order to develop appropriate support services for them.
