A study of domestic violence in the Wairarapa Domestic Violence Intervention Group - Wairarapa Domestic Violence Intervention Group 2005
This report presents the statistics found during research, undertaken between June 2004 and March 2005, of agency data in the Wairarapa, compiled by the Domestic Violence Intervention Group. Figures include comparisons of the genders of victims and perpetrators, the ethnicity of victims and perpetrators, whether children were present, the number of cases not reported to police but known to Women's Refuge, and whether any of the perpetrators or victims were repeats during that period. Figures of note were that 76.5% of the perpetrators were men, and 23.5% were women - a figure much higher than expected. Fifty-two point four percent of the perpetrators were Caucasian, 40.9% were Māori ,and 3.7% were Pacific peoples. Maori are still over-represented in the statistics, but this figure is lower than that reported in other crime statistics. Lastly, Women's Refuge added 57 unreported cases to the 332 reported cases hence there is still a lot of under-reporting to police.
