Bibliography p. 69

This report sets out the findings of a study designed to ascertain factors that may increase the risk of elder abuse or neglect, and to identify protective factors that may prevent abuse or neglect from occurring or reoccurring. A qualitative study was undertaken using an ecological model-based interview guide. This approach captured data about elder abuse and neglect from older people, some of whom had experienced elder abuse, health professionals, representatives of non-governmental organisations and other providers of services for older people, representatives from various ethnic groups, and across multiple regions. Face-to-face, focus group and telephone interviews were carried out and data analysis took a generally indicative approach. The authors discuss their findings in relation to risk and protective factors at the six different levels of the ecological model: individual, family, institutional, community, societal and cultural.

A fact sheet (print only) Preventing elder abuse and neglect" (#2452) is also available. Record #2552
