The purpose of this Resource Sheet is to summarise the state of knowledge about the prevalence of child abuse and neglect in Australia. It provides an overview of Australian studies that have estimated the prevalence of the different forms of child maltreatment such as physical abuse, neglect, emotional maltreatment, the witnessing of family violence, and sexual abuse. The best available evidence suggests that the prevalence rate for the witnessing of family violence is between 12% and 23% in Australia. Originally written in 2010 and updated in 2013.
