This report presents information on the position of children in New Zealand to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. The report was produced by a non-governmental organisation formed specifically to report to the Committee, and to provide critical comment on the report made by the New Zealand Government to the Committee. The report describes the measures taken to implement and uphold the Convention on the rights of the child, and discusses the position of New Zealand children in relation to civil rights and freedoms, family environment and alternative care, basic health and welfare, education, leisure and cultural activities. Special protection measures for children in emergency situations are also described. The report provides analysis of the position of children in New Zealand government policy and legislation across all of these areas. Overall, the report points to many instances of harm to children in New Zealand, including high levels of violence against children.
