This literature review examines key research findings on the effects that witnessing domestic violence has on children. Internalising and externalising effects, issues of self-concept, and school performance are discussed. Less obvious effects, such as responses and attitudes about conflict resolution, assigning responsibility for violence and knowledge, and skills in dealing with violent incidents, are also discussed. The article also highlights the limitations of the research. Consistent trends emerged from the literature that demonstrated all aspects of a child's development can be impaired through witnessing parental violence.
