This review is based on information from a range of sources, including the personal experiences of the authors, personal communications with children engaged in sex work and the people working with them, data from books and other written sources, as well as from documented research. It covers the following areas related to child prostitution: information availability; New Zealand laws; definitions of child prostitution; incidence; age of entry into sex work and reasons for entering; hazards of sex work; gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender prostitutes; clients/exploiters; child prostitution among indigenous peoples in colonised nations; and prevention and intervention. It argues that the invisibility of under-age prostitutes, definition issues relating to what constitutes under-age prostitution, and a lack of services for the children affected, results in significant barriers to systematic research and understanding of the issues involved.
