This article examines children's perspectives on their experiences in a residential care setting. It reports on the results of a research project against the background of international studies and existing literature on children's perspectives of residential care. Discussion is provided on security, attachment, relationships with friends and peers, significance of caregivers and staff, identity, normalisation, and autonomy. A lack of studies on outcomes, which are child-specific and reflect their perspectives on care, is identified. The authors conclude that children's perspectives have much to offer in terms of policy and practice-related decisions on residential care in New Zealand.
