This article addresses misconceptions about the Crimes (Substituted Section 59) Amendment Act 2007 (anti-smacking law), promulgated in Schluter et al's report from the Pacific Islands Families study published in the same issue of the New Zealand Medical journal. The author points out that contrary to Schluter et al's article, no corporal punishment is legally acceptable under the amended law. The author then discusses why such a correction needs to be made, in the context of New Zealanders' long established practices in relation to physically punishing children.
