The Statistical Profile of Northcote is the first phase in the Northcote Child and Youth Development Project, a project that aims to improve social, economic, environmental and culture outcomes for children and young people within the context of their families and communities. The statistics and commentary in the report illustrate the environment in which children and young people are being raised in Northcote. It is intended that the profile be used to inform future service planning and delivery. The report compiles a large range of statistical information and discussion in a number of areas, including: population, health, education, employment and income, housing, leisure and recreation, the physical environment, community activities, and safety issues. The report notes that family violence is a significant issue in Northcote. In 2004, there were 85 care and protection notifications to CYFS, with over one-third of these children aged between 10-14 years. There are also a large number of grandparents raising children full-time due in part to children being victims of child abuse or neglect. The Safer Family Violence Prevention Network, 2005, expresses concern over the incidence of teenage sons assaulting their mothers. It is suggested that more emphasis on prevention and early intervention is required.
