This book tells the story of the creation of the San Diego Family Justice Center (SDFJC) a comprehensive "one stop shop" for victims of family violence and their children in the USA. The Centre is a place where victims can come to one location to talk to an advocate, get a restraining order, plan for their safety, talk to a police officer, meet with a prosecutor, receive medical assistance, counsel with chaplain, get transportation help, and obtain counselling. The book also explains the philosophical foundation for the developing National Family Justice Center movement. The book sets out to convey the simple, profound power of bringing professionals together into one geographic location and how in its creation it challenges every segment of the local community to rally around this new living organism until it grows into a powerful haven of safety and a force for change. The book aims to be a road map for the creation of Family Justice Centers in America, and around the world. The companion manual by the same authors "Hope for hurting families II: how to start a Family Justice Centre in your community" aims to give readers the background and tools to start their own Family Justice Centre.
