This study, prepared for the Eastern Wakefield Primary Care Trust, explores health service response to domestic violence occurring in that city. The changing face of domestic violence has led to a reframing of it from a social care issue into an integrated health and social care issue. The report looks critically at the medical model of care for issues like domestic violence, where the medical discourse tends to become the dominant one and limits possible responses to an issue where the causes lie in the social domain. The research sought to investigate ways in which domestic violence is understood and talked about in healthcare, and the impact of this on policymakers, health professionals and women accessing services.
