This article describes the changes to domestic violence legislation in New Zealand proposed in the Domestic Violence (Enhancing Safety) Bill 2008. The author discusses current domestic violence legislation and the proposed Bill in relation to ensuring there are effective legal tools for addressing family violence and fundamental principles of natural justice. In particular the article addresses changes to bail and sentencing laws and protection orders. The author finds the proposed changes to police powers in relation to protection orders problematic.
